6 south-indian vegetarian dishes to Die-For!

Our south-indian cuisine offers hell a lot of dishes for both Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian lovers. Our cuisine is one of the best cuisines in the world, packed with lot of spices, aromas and nutrition. We know lot of foreigners, who travel to India for food and many come to South-India on a food tour just to taste our delicacies. Here is a list of our favourite "Vegetarian" dishes, that will win over any dish from any cuisine, hands down! 

  • Idly with Chutney and Sambar
    Who in their right senses will ignore a hot plate of Idly with three kinds of chutney and sambar. This dish can be termed as one of the most consumed dishes by south-indians.

  • Pongal with Vada
    Though this dish is disliked by many children, and some even call it as "sleeping dose"(pun intended :D ) This is one of the signature dishes of south-indian cuisine. There may be some variations of this dish in various parts of south-india, but still this dish stands out with authentic south-indian flavours.

  • Curd rice
    For most of the people without Indian origin, this dish would seem insane. Because when the whole world is eating yoghurt(curd) as a sweetened dish, we are eating it with rice mixed with salt and some spices. If you are one of those, who hasn't tried this dish in your life; trust us you are missing something too delicious to be this simple. Also there is also a popular notion that, if you are going to a new place and are afraid to try the local cuisine, just order this dish; there is nothing that can go wrong with the preparation.

  • Dosa with sambar and chutney
    This is another dish, that is in heavy competition with Idly to be one of the most consumed dish in south-indian cuisine.

  • Vathha Kulambu 
    Just imagine a plate full of hot rice topped with three ladles of Vathha Kulambu along with "appalam" or "vathhal"; for most of us that will be one of the definition for "Heaven". This is the one of the tangy, spicy and hot curry with distinct flavour of either Garlic or Curry leaves. One of the must-try dishes of south-indian cuisine.

  • Parotta
    This can be termed as the south-indian version of roti, but tastes much better than roti ;) . Initially originated from Kerala, but can be found in most of the places all over south-india. There are many variations to this dish too, but still the simple parotta with veg. kurma is one of the dishes that most of us love.
